Review Pay-per-lead marketplace for local pros

Thumbtack review: pay-per-lead where you set your own lead price and up to five pros can be contacted in the first four hours

Thumbtack is a consumer marketplace where you pay for each customer who contacts you, at a lead price you set yourself, and a customer can contact up to five pros in the first four hours of a search. Refunds exist but are at Thumbtack's sole discretion within 45 days. It is well documented and fair for what it is: residential demand capture. It has no way to reach a facility director who is not searching, which is the whole job for a commercial service company.

What it is

What Thumbtack actually sells.

On Thumbtack, pros pay for leads: customers who reach out directly. The help center states that prices vary with the type and size of the job, how many pros are available and the market, and that pros set their own lead prices, the exact amount paid per lead. Opportunities (open leads) show a price upfront and are only charged if the customer responds. The Quality Commitment limits the number of pros a customer can contact to five in the first four hours of a search, with a Phone Number Guarantee that verified numbers are provided. The refund policy lists automatic refunds for some cases and case-by-case refunds requested within 45 days, all at Thumbtack's sole discretion. No price list is published; prices are shown in the pro app.

Where it is strong

What Thumbtack does well.

  • You set the exact price you pay per lead and can change it any time.
  • Opportunities are charged only when the customer responds, and show the price first.
  • Competition is capped at five pros in the first four hours, and phone numbers are verified.
  • A written refund policy with automatic refunds for flagged leads and duplicates.
  • No contract and no monthly fee; spend follows demand.

Where it falls short

What to know before you pay.

  • Consumer marketplace. Commercial buyers do not post cleaning contracts or facility programs on Thumbtack.
  • Up to five pros can be contacted per customer, so most leads are a bidding race.
  • Lead prices rise with demand and competition, and the price list is only visible inside the app.
  • Refunds are at Thumbtack's sole discretion; a customer who goes silent is not a refund case.
  • All follow-up, quoting and closing is your time.

What customers say

Thumbtack reviews on third-party platforms.

Thumbtack's Trustpilot score is 2.2 across 6,600 reviews, and the platform ranks it last of four in its Contractor category. Pros complain about the cost of leads that never become jobs, refunds denied at Thumbtack's discretion, and support that is hard to reach. Homeowners on the same profile complain about being contacted by too many pros at once.

Scores and counts read from each platform on September 17, 2026. Themes are paraphrased from the platform's own review summaries and the most recent reviews; we quote nothing at length.

Where Smarter Outbound beats Thumbtack, and where it does not.

Our leads come from campaigns run for you alone. There is no five-pro window.

Decision-maker, matching commercial property, real interest. If it is not that, it is not billed.

Our team reads and qualifies every reply and books the meeting; the thread lands in your dashboard.

No app bidding

Pay per qualified lead at a rate agreed before launch, or a flat $1,497 a month for every channel.

Measured, published results

5.6% email reply per prospect, 15.5% positive, 6.1% SMS reply to commercial buyers, with sample sizes.

FAQ

Thumbtack questions, answered straight.

How much does Thumbtack charge per lead?
There is no published price list. Thumbtack's help center, read on September 17, 2026, says prices vary with the type and size of the job, pro availability and your market, and that you set your own lead price in the app. Opportunities show the price upfront and charge only if the customer responds.
How many pros get the same Thumbtack lead?
Thumbtack's Quality Commitment limits customers to contacting five pros in the first four hours of a search; after that they can contact more. The number of pros contacted is shown on the lead.
Can I get a refund on a Thumbtack lead?
Some refunds are automatic (leads flagged by Trust and Safety, declined Smart Match leads). Others can be requested within 45 days, for cases like a changed job, an invalid phone number or a duplicate. All refunds are at Thumbtack's sole discretion.
Is Thumbtack good for commercial cleaning or facility services?
No. It is a consumer marketplace. Commercial contracts are won by reaching property managers and facility directors before renewal, which is outbound work. Smarter Outbound runs that and bills per qualified lead or $1,497 a month.
